In this upsetting and controversial photo, an Iraqi soldier has been burned to death, just before a ceasefire officially ended Operation Desert Storm. Many news outlets chose not to publish the photo. Photographer Kenneth Jarecke was surprised by the decision, as he felt the picture could help put a human face on a war that seemed far-removed to many Americans. Of the man in the photo, Jarecke said “He was fighting to save his life to the very end, till he was completely burned up. He was trying to get out of that truck.”
