That vulture you saw picking away at bones on the side of I-95 is not a vulture. Old World vultures and New World vultures share a name, but they are two species that are not closely related at all.
Old World vultures are found in the “old world” in Asia and Africa, whereas New World vultures are seen only in North America. Old World vultures scavenge using scent, but New World ones scavenge with their eyesight. Mother nature managed to evolve two separate scavenging birds, and that’s why the earth rocks.
