College And University Are Different Things Everywhere But The U.S.

The terms college and university are pretty much interchangeable in America, but in most other countries they are two separate institutions. In the United Kingdom and Canada, colleges are institutions that prepare students for university. Often this means a college will have joint programs or affiliations with a university. A student can receive a diploma from a college than a degree from a university.

In America, the only real difference is in the programs available. Any college will offer an undergraduate degree, but a school is classified as a university if they also offer graduate and Ph.D. programs.
