The hipster in the corner of the bar might know the criteria for being called a liquor versus alcohol, but for the rest of us, here’s a crash course on your favorite drinks. Alcohol is a chemistry term and refers to how atoms come together when something with sugar fermented.

Wine, beer, and malt are direct products of alcohol but aren’t liquor. Something can only be called a liquor if they are produced from an alcohol product, like gin or vodka. To make it even more confusing, a liqueur is a beverage made from liquor. Basically, humans can always find a way to make a drink stronger.
