In Van Halen’s’ prime, they were selling out stadiums worldwide. They were true rockstars and in true rockstar fashion, they had some diva requests for their dressing room. They were particular about their candy, and put in their contract to the venues they played that they wanted M&Ms but there needed to be no brown ones. There was no reason given at the time, but they never wanted to see brown M&Ms in their dressing room.
In a 2012 interview, David Lee Roth came clean about the request. It was simply there to make sure promoters had actually read the contract. If they hadn’t, serious injury could have occurred. As Roth explained, “If I came backstage… and I saw brown M&Ms on the catering table, then I guarantee the promoter had not read the contract rider, and we would have to do a serious line check” of their sophisticated stage setup to make sure that the lighting and stage engineers had followed instructions carefully.
