Most secrets arise from disgusting behavior—there’s no getting around it or tip-toeing past it’s disgraceful fact. People do things they aren’t proud of; things they don’t want to think about or have to explain to anyone. They don’t want to think that the decision they made should be a direct reflection on who they are. But it is a fact that is hard to escape.

This was a pretty deplorable secret that would make anyone think twice about their grandparents: “I just found out that my grandparents were having trouble getting pregnant so they adopted a toddler-aged brother and sister when my mother was seven. Soon after, my grandmother got pregnant, and that is when things got weird. The girl died from a very mysterious fall down the stairs and the boy was quietly given to another family. They never, ever spoke of either child from that day forward.”
