In 2008, the second worst blizzard in modern history hit Afghanistan. It caused temperatures to fall below -22 degrees Fahrenheit and snowfall more than five feet in some mountain regions.

Because of these circumstances, the blizzard caused a death toll of 1,337. Many individuals froze to death, while others died when their vehicles were blocked by the snow. There were hundreds of frostbite-related amputations across the country and in addition to human loss, there were over 100,000 sheep and goat deaths with 315,000 cattle deaths.
