There’s Google For That

The popular search engine attracted a loyal following among a growing number of people using the Internet. Google began as a research project by Larry Page and Sergey Brin. The two theorized about a better system that would analyze the relationships among websites.

Page and Brin originally nicknamed their search engine “BackRub” since the system checked backlinks to estimate the importance of a website. Eventually, they changed the name to Google. By August 1998, the company would receive a $100,000 contribution from Andy Bechtolsheim, a month before Google’s launch.
