J.K. Rowling was making a name for herself after the release of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. The Chamber of Secrets is the second novel in the series, in which mysterious attacks on students and disembodied voices that only Harry hears lead him down into the Chamber of Secrets.

Rowling found it difficult to finish the second book. She was afraid it would not live up to the expectations raised from the first book. The British author even took the manuscript back for six weeks to revise it. It immediately took first place on the UK bestseller lists.
