Lorne Michaels can be saluted for bringing laughter to the homes of millions. The creator of Saturday Night Live received his Medal of Freedom with dignity. Thanks to his show we have comedians that may not have been around if they did not get their start on the sketch show.

“One of the most transformative entertainment figures of our time, Lorne Michaels followed his dreams to New York City, where he created a sketch show that brought satire, wits, and modern comedy to homes around the world,” said Obama. “Under his meticulous command as executive producer, Saturday Night Live has entertained audiences across generations.”

Architects hardly ever get the national recognition compared to the others who received this medal. Which is why it is so great that Obama recognized Maya Lin, one of the greatest architects living. Her designs are innovative and important for the future.

Obama had encouraging words to say about her. “Boldly challenging our understanding of the world, Maya Lin’s designs have brought people of all walks of life together in spirits of remembrance, introspection, and humility. The manipulation of natural terrain and topography within her works inspires us to bridge our differences.” If everyone viewed things the way Obama did, the world would be a better place.
