The Amazing Citizens Who Received Medals Of Freedom!
Former president Barack Obama just recently presented the last batch of the Presidential Medal of Freedom awards to deserving individuals. The medal is the country’s highest civilian honor so to receive one is something to be extremely proud of. The honor goes to those who have made “especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors,” according to the White House.
Robert De Niro
Robert De Niro is one of the most successful actors of this generation. “A Sicilian father turned New York mobster,” said Obama. “A mobster who runs a casino.
A mobster who needs therapy. (Laughter.) A father-in-law who is scarier than a mobster.” (Laughter.)
Michael Jordan
Michael Jordan is more than just a logo and Obama acknowledged that at the ceremony. Yes, he is the greatest NBA player of all time but he is more than just a basketball player. He has a big role in communities among other commitments as well.
Obama said, “he’s more than a logo, more than just an Internet meme. (Laughter.) More than just a charitable donor or a business owner committed to diversity. There is a reason you call someone ‘the Michael Jordan of’ — Michael Jordan of neurosurgery because Michael Jordan is the Michael Jordan of greatness.” It was heartwarming to watch.
