Sarah Thomas is Elizabeth’s seventeen-year-old big sister and she spoke with People magazine. Sarah recounted Elizabeth’s reaction to their first meeting with Tad Cummins. She said after he touched her, “Elizabeth looked at me with her eyes, like, ‘This guy is scary, get this guy off.’”

However, while she initially felt as though Tad was extremely strange, she soon became entranced with the older man. Tad Cummins was old enough to be Elizabeth’s father or even grandfather at age fifty, but this didn’t deter him from pursuing Elizabeth. As is the case with most predators, Tad Cummins “groomed” Elizabeth and earned her trust. The pair allegedly kissed on school property on Jan. 23, 2017, according to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.
