Teachers Who Go Above and Beyond the Job
A Lesson In Empathy
Omar Currie is a third-grade teacher from North Carolina and he wanted to do something positive after he heard some of his students calling one boy “woman” and “gay.” Instead of just reporting the kids to the office, Mr. Currie sat them all down and read to them the famous and somewhat controversial King & King, a children’s fairy tale that depicts a same-sex relationship. Mr. Currie wanted to teach his children a lesson about empathy and embracing differences between people. He told Huffington Post, “The moral is to treat people well, no matter who they are.” The children were then able to open up a discussion about embracing differences.
He’ll Scooby-Doo If He Has To
Sometimes a teacher has just got to do what a teacher’s got to do. This history teacher was tired of the bad grades he was seeing his students produce on their tests. Scouring his mind to come up with a new way to motivate the kids to study and perform well on the tests, this teacher came up with a challenge of sorts. If the class could come up with five A’s on a test, he would come to school dressed up like Scooby-Doo. Unsure of the results, he offered the class the bargain, and they accepted. Not long after, this teacher graded the tests and realized he’d actually be coming to school dressed up like the cartoon dog! This photo is proof that he kept his word.
