Navy Seal Mike Day was cleaning houses in Iraq’s Anbar province when he was ambushed by four Al-Qaeda militants who shot him 27 times from less than 10 feet away. His rifle was shot out of his hand, and 11 bullets hit his body armor. Meanwhile, 16 bullets hit his arms, legs, and torso.
A grenade exploded just 10 feet away from Day. He woke up a minute later and killed the two fighters with his pistol. When the fighting stopped, he got up and walked himself to a medical helicopter. For his efforts, he was awarded the Purple Heart, the oldest military decoration, given to military members in the US.
