Support for the Boycott
Many senators supported the boycott, and the city council of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania voted in favor of the governor of Pennsylvania to call for a boycott. While he refused, and no federal support for the government was given, many senators in Alabama were on board with the boycott and fought to raise awareness.
Senator Richard Shelby wrote a letter to the American Society of Travel Agents encouraging them to join in the boycott. He wrote, “For the safety, security and well-being of our citizens, I do not believe that we can trust that we will be protected while in Aruba.”
