The French opened this prison in 1862 but it would become very famous during the Vietnam War for its inhumane treatment of its prisoners. Prisoners were often shackled in “Tiger Cages”. Over 1,000 prisoners died during the construction of this prison which set a precedent for how it would be run in the future.
These were 5-by-9 foot concrete pits with access to the outside only through the bars at the top. Every cage held multiple prisoners. The jail would close as soon as the Vietnam War had ended.
Hundreds would die every day in this prison just ahead that made headlines for a very weird reason in 2015.
