The prisoners were shackled together at night and would get attacked by the vampire bats that inhabited the island. One of the cruelest methods that were used to kill the prisoners would be to throw them in a pit of fire while they were still alive.
Some prisoners were even kept in “bear pits” which were just holes dug into the ground and covered at the top by iron bars. Author Henri Charriere was an inmate who escaped from the Island and wrote about it in his well-known book Papillon.
