Andersonville, Georgia was home to the deadliest prison during the Civil War era. It was a very useful dumping ground for the Confederate army because they were able to house almost 45,000 Union troops there during the last year of the war.

In the last year alone, over 13,000 of those troops would die from various causes due to the environment at Camp Sumter, from overcrowding to disease and not to mention executions. It’s said that the word “deadline” may have originated from Camp Sumter. That was the term that was used to describe the line around the prison that inmates couldn’t cross or else they’d be shot.
