It’s chilling to note that anyone who was sent to go to prison at Coiba Island was nicknamed “the Disappeared”. It’s an island off of the coast of Panama and was established in 1919.

Two military regimes housed their political prisoners on the island because it’s nearly impossible to escape. It’s deceptively beautiful landscape was the setting for a lot of torture and disease. Guards would take prisoners out into the forest and perform mock executions to blindfolded captives in order to get information.
