Historically Evil Prisons That Make Alcatraz Look Like A Five Star Hotel
To say that a prison is one of the worst places on earth would be an understatement. While the main purpose of jail today might be incarceration with the end goal of rehabilitation, that certainly has not always been the case.
While many of the prisons and facilities have disappeared with time, there are a select few that haunt our history books because of the atrocities committed there. These are the prisons that would execute and torture on the turn of a dime without hesitation. The pictures are chilling yet weirdly awe-inspiring.

Devil’s Island saw over 60,000 prisoners reach its shores and only 2,000 ended up making it out alive. For anyone keeping score, that means about 3% of the prisoners actually made it out. It’s located on a remote Island near Giuana and was chosen by Napoleon because it would be nearly impossible to escape.
During its reign from 1852-1953, it was one of the most feared penal colonies on the planet. Prisoners were worked to death building different things and they were given barely any food.
