2008: Summer Olympics
Beijing hosted the 2008 Summer Olympics, which became the most watched Olympics in history with 4.7 billion viewers worldwide. Controversy arose surrounding the host, as many other countries were very critical of China’s record concerning human rights. The air pollution in Beijing was also a major concern, and the overall ecological impact, residential displacement, and treatment of migrant workers while constructing the Olympic city drew controversy. Still, the games that year were successful, with China winning the most gold medals and the United States winning the most medals overall. The opening ceremony was considered to be one of the best Olympic ceremonies in decades.
