2003: Hu Jintao
In 2003, Hu Jintao was named President of the People’s Republic after his role of general secretary of the Chinese Communist Party. After being elected president, he also became a chairperson of the Central Military Commission. During his time as president, he released the “Eight Honors and Eight Shames,” a moral code that listed what a good Chinese citizen should regard as honor and shame. During his time in office, Hu Jintao reinstated state control in sectors of the economy that had previously been relaxed. However, this resulted in a decade of consistent economic growth, and cemented China as a major world power.
