In 2004, Benitez allegedly bludgeoned his girlfriend to death with a dumbbell after she ended their ten-year relationship. He took his son and fled the scene. Four years later, police received a call about a suspicious male with a young boy in El Monte, California. It was Benitez. A standoff ensued and gunfire was exchanged. Benitez was shot and killed. His son survived with only a bullet wound to the thigh.
