Inside The Fundamentalist Church of the Latter Day Saints
Husbands Are Mostly Celibate
Something about the FLDS’ new regulations about marriage feels like it’s lifted from an episode of Handmaid’s Tale. In 2011, Warren Jeffs proclaimed that husbands and wives were no longer allowed to consummate their marriages – like, ever. The most contact a couple could have is a three-second handshake. Basically, nearly every FLDS male is completely celibate, even though he has multiple wives.
There was one small problem with Jeff’s new celibacy rule. With no babies, there’s no future for the church. For this reason, Jeffs enacted found a horrific work-around that promoted the sexual assault of married FLDS women.
