Times Activists Made Their Voices Heard in 2016

Brexit: Should They Stay, Or Should They Go?

A referendum was held in June of 2016, letting the people of the United Kingdom decide by vote whether the UK should remain as part of the European Union or depart. The vote was termed “Brexit,” a combination of “Britain” and “exit” that would become one of the most used coined terms of 2016.

The population of the UK who were against leaving the EU was worried that this would lead to an economic disaster, severely disrupt trade, and leave with no clear plan set for the future. On the pro side, citizens of the UK believe that Brexit would allow more freedom of trade and greater economic gain. Without the restrictions of the EU, they argued, the UK would be able to trade internationally without the burdens of punitive tariffs and regulations. The referendum divided the UK and before the votes were cast, people marched to voice their opinions.
