Movement Turns Deadly in Texas

As 2016 continued, so did the killings of black people by police officers. In Baton Rouge, Alton Sterling was shot at point blank range while being held down by two other white officers. In St. Paul, Minnesota, another black man was shot in killed on July 6th with his girlfriend and 4-year-old daughter in the car.

The peace-based movement took a deadly turn when the two deaths sparked a protest in Dallas, Texas, the following day on July 7th. At the conclusion of the protest, Micah Xavier Johnson opened fire on police, killing five officers and wounding seven others. Early July alone saw 112 protests in over 88 U.S. cities. BLM has extended overseas, with protests in London, Birmingham, and Nottingham, showing international support and the continuance of the movement into 2017.
