Are Malia & Sasha Obama As Innocent As We Think?
The Obama girls were the youngest children to reside in the White House in decades. They spent almost their entire childhood growing up under the spotlight of the United States presidency. They have emerged as two young beautiful women who will undoubtedly go on to do great things. Check out a list of little-known facts about their life, including some scandalous moments along the way.
Malia
Malia Ann Obama was born on July 4th, 1998 in Chicago, Illinois. She is Barack Obama’s oldest child. Before her dad became the president, Malia went to school in Chicago at the University of Chicago Laboratory school, which is a private school affiliated with the U of C. While in Chicago, Malia took part in such activities as soccer, dance, piano, tennis, and drama. Malia was in the 5th grade when her father began his presidency.
She switched schools to attend the Sidwell Friends School in Washington D.C.; multiple children of presidents have attended the school including Chelsea Clinton and Joe Biden’s grandchildren. Malia graduated from high school in 2016 and decided to take a gap year before attending Harvard University. She was eighteen years old when her father’s last presidential term ended.
Sasha
Natasha Obama, or Sasha, for short, was born June 10th 2001 in Chicago. She is Obama’s youngest child. She attended the same schools as her older sister Malia. When her father took office, she was only six years old. This made her the youngest child to enter the White House since John F. Kennedy Jr.
While in Chicago, Sasha was also involved in a variety of extracurricular activities including gymnastics, tap, piano, and tennis. When her father finished his term she was a sophomore in high school. Her parents decided to remain in Washington D.C. until Sasha completes school.
Sasha’s Illness
When Obama’s youngest daughter was only three months old, the Obamas had to face what no parent ever wants. Sasha had a serious case of meningitis. The sickness can cause inflammation of the brain and spinal cord, and in babies, it can be fatal. Obviously, the entire family was affected by the horrifying experience.
In 2012, President Obama discussed the occurrence and said that it was the hardest time in his life. He further talked about remembering when doctors had to do a spinal tap on tiny Sasha. Obama recalled, “Your world narrows to this very small point. There’s one thing you care about and you don’t care about anything else.” Luckily Sasha recovered but what a terrifying experience!
Open Letter in Parade Magazine
At the beginning of Obama’s presidency, he drafted a letter to his daughters that was published in Parade magazine. In the letter he apologized to them for not being able to spend as much time with the girls during the two years he spent on the campaign trail. President Obama also discussed the wishes he had for his daughters and for children throughout the United States.
The 44th President wrote, “I realized that my own life wouldn’t count for much unless I was able to ensure that you had every opportunity for happiness and fulfillment in yours. In the end, girls, that’s why I ran for President: because of what I want for you and for every child in this nation.”
Daughter’s Interview Regret
Before President Obama was elected and still on the campaign trail he did an interview with Maria Menounos for Access Hollywood. In the spur of the moment, the Obama girls joined in on the interview. It took place on the 4th of July, Malia’s birthday. In hindsight, Obama said he regretted doing the interview. He said, “I think we got carried away in the moment.”
He was criticized because he had said he would keep his family life private but then the girls were seen doing the interview. We never saw another instance like this in the entire eight years that he was president. Check out the nostalgic interview here:
Puppy Promise
The Obamas promised their daughters that they could get a dog when they moved into the White House. President Obama even repeated his promise and mentioned it in his victory speech. Malia is actually allergic to pet dander so they had to be very careful with which animal they chose.
Obama said their options had been narrowed down to a labradoodle or a Portuguese Water Dog. Although they wanted to be able to find a shelter animal. Senator Ted Kennedy ended up giving the Obamas a gift of a Portuguese Water Dog. The girls named him Bo. A few years later, the first family adopted a second dog of the same breed and named her Sunny.
Malia Obama’s Future Plans
After Malia graduated from high school in 2016, her parents announced that she planned to take a gap year and then attend Harvard University in the Fall of 2017. Both of Malia’s parents attended Harvard themselves, so it’s no surprise she selected the Ivy League university.
Malia is seemingly interested in studying film and has even accepted internships from various individuals in the film industry throughout high school. Apparently, during her gap year, Malia took a three-month trip to South America. This was not revealed until after her father left office. She was there as a member of the There Will Be Dragons organization.
Malia’s South American Trip
The organization, There Will Be Dragons, specializes in educational trips for students taking a gap year or studying abroad. Malia was primarily in Bolivia and Peru, where the goal was to study “current political trends, social movements and environmental conservation efforts.”
In Bolivia, Malia stayed with a local family in Tiquipaya and received no special treatment. While guides on the trip were told they would be hosting an “important American dignitary,” they apparently assumed it was another girl with the group. One of the guides named Gregorio Manai said, “There was a blond girl and we assumed she was the important one.”
Malia’s Internships
As mentioned previously, it seems as though Malia has taken in interest in the film industry. In 2015, she was even able to intern on the set of HBO’s Girls. No word has gotten out exactly about what her duties were on set, and only a few photos were leaked out.
There is no doubt she was probably able to shadow creator and star of the show Lena Dunham. Lena has been very vocally supportive of the Obama administration. This wasn’t Malia’s first internship, however. She has obviously been interested in film for a while. In the summer of 2014, she interned on Halle Berry’s film Extant.
Malia on Set
Of course, Malia’s internship was supposed to be kept secret but was ultimately linked to the press. One of the stars of the film Extant, Camryn Manheim, spoke to Entertainment Tonight about having Malia on set. She said, “I can tell you that she is graceful and lovely, and just charming and delightful…she’s pretty remarkable. Any parent would look at her and be proud.”
It was also announced that Malia will soon be going to work in an internship with famed producer Harvey Weinstein, who owns the Miramax production company. Some people were taken aback by this news as Harvey has somewhat of a sketchy reputation in Hollywood.
Harvey and Malia
Harvey Weinstein is known as one of the most powerful producers in Hollywood. In 2015, he was questioned by the NYPD over accusations that he had groped a 22-year-old model. However, it has sometimes been referred to as an “open secret” in Hollywood that Harvey has had questionable relationships with women.
There are many rumors surrounding a “casting couch” type attitude and rewarding women with roles or vindictively taking them away if they refuse him. Whether all of this has true has yet to be verified. Malia Obama will more than likely still have a Secret Service detail assigned to her so hopefully she has no problems!
Sasha’s Summer Job
Sasha Obama is still in high school and the Obamas will remain in Washington D.C. until she graduates. However, even the first daughter once had a summer job. In the summer of 2016, it was reported that Sasha briefly worked at a casual seafood restaurant named Nancy’s on Martha’s Vineyard. Sasha worked at the cash register and allegedly even bussed the tables.
Of course, the president’s daughter was the only teen working there who had to be flanked by Secret Service Agents, but surely it was a good experience nonetheless. While there are no reports on Sasha’s college plans, it has been rumored that the younger Obama daughter plans to go into medicine.
Malia’s Friend Was Bitten
In 2016, one of Malia’s friends posted on Snapchat that she was bitten by the family’s dog Sunny. She snapped, “I [expletive] hate Sunny”, and a photo of her face with a small cut on her left cheek. She snapped another pic with Malia as she reclined on the White House doctor’s table, saying “Malia thinks it’s funny.”
Apparently, Malia’s friend was bending down to give the dog a kiss when she snapped at her. Yikes! It’s never a good idea to get too close to a dog’s face that you don’t know. Even if that dog happens to be the first dog! Luckily, the cut is relatively small so she is probably already healed up by now.
Obama Girls and Social Media
This is not the only time the girls have been discovered on Snapchat. Malia has appeared on Snaps of her friends at various times, including at parties with what look to be beer pong games going on. Malia also came under fire when a selfie was released with her wearing the t-shirt of a rap group called “Pro Era”. A member of the group posted the photo, which he claimed he received from a mutual friend. Obama visited Jimmy Kimmel and talked about his daughter’s love of the social app.
He said that he was asking the girls about how the app worked and in true Obama nature he started discussing social media with Michelle. The President said, “I started talking to Michelle about the implications of social media and what all this means.” Meanwhile, Sasha was Snapchatting herself looking bored with the caption, “This is my dad lecturing us on the meaning of social media.” Obama added that Michelle and Malia found the post hysterical.
Sasha Loves Ryan Reynolds
In 2016, Sasha and Malia were also able to attend their very first state dinner. Michelle said that they typically never included the girls in dinners like this but since they were reaching the end of her husband’s second term, that they thought it was “the right time.” She said they had tried to maintain the girls’ normal activities as long as they possibly could, including time spent hanging out with their friends. Michelle said she wanted to make sure they were able to attend at least one state dinner as a memory to look back on, so they invited them.
While at the dinner the girls were able to meet movie actor hunk Ryan Reynolds. A photo was even snapped of Sasha as she met him with Malia looking on and giving a thumbs up in the background. The girls are just like any other teen girls around the nation. Ryan can probably relate to Obama now that he has two girls of his own. So he surely agreed with his comments, “Daughters are the best, you can’t beat daughters.”
Malia at That Music Festival
In 2016, Malia was spotted living it up at the Lollapalooza musical festival. She was even spotted smoking a questionable substance, which many thought to be marijuana. A witness attempted to maliciously photograph her saying ” You could smell the marijuana smoke. I saw some young guy hand her a cigarette and she took at least one hit on it.”
Of course, many people were outraged but others said she was simply acting like many other eighteen-year-old girls do across the United States. Surely, as any other father would be, there is no doubt Obama was probably not too happy about the matter.
Dating Daughters
President Obama also discussed an issue that many dads must come to grips with – his teen girls beginning to date. When talking to a Raleigh area radio station, he said that his daughters had already begun dating. Surprisingly the President said he wasn’t worried about the issue. Obama said, “The truth is, I’m pretty relaxed about it for two reasons.” Relaxed? Wow.
The President went on to say that Michelle has done a great job raising the girls by providing an excellent example. Secondly, he added, “They have Secret Service.” This is definitely something all dads probably wish they could have when their daughters begin dating.
Hawaii Escape Room
Over the Christmas Holiday, President Obama and family returned to his childhood home of Hawaii. One year earlier a local “escape room” tweeted at Obama asking him to come visit. An “escape room” is a game where there are a set of challenges and obstacles in order to break free from a particular room which is usually themed and it must be done within a certain amount of time. This particular escape room is called Breakout Waikiki said that the President and family actually showed up unannounced and had booked the game under a different name.
The company had no idea until the Secret Service showed up an hour before. The manager said that the Obama family won the game and escaped with only 12 seconds remaining. Apparently, they undertook the challenge of one of the harder rooms. According to a shift leader,“They were in a room where you’re a secret agent and terrorists come and grab you. It was Malia who did a lot of the work.” It’s known Malia wants to go into film but maybe she will transition her way into government one day, sounds like she’s already a great leader!
Obama Girls on Trump & Letter from Bush Twins
President Obama spoke about the outcome of the 2016 presidential election and what that meant for his daughters shortly before his term ended. Obama has said that his daughters were disappointed by the outcome of the election, but told them “don’t mope.” Both of the girls’ parents were very vocal about the election with Mrs. Obama specifically talking about what it would mean for girls if Hillary Clinton had been elected.
Shortly before Obama’s term ended the Bush twins, Barbara and Jenna wrote an open letter to the Obama girls. In the letter, the girls discussed some of their shared experiences and how they would always be rooting for them to do well in life.
A Touching Farewell
In President Obama’s farewell speech, he dedicated a good amount of it to his family. Obama talked about how proud he was to watch his daughters grow from little girls into beautiful and intelligent young women especially while in the public eye. He said, “Of all that I’ve done in my life, I’m most proud to be your dad.” Everyone in the room seemed to be moved by the speech, including Malia who had tears streaming down her face.
His younger daughter Sasha was notably missing from the room. And apparently, she had to stay home because she had an exam the next day. Wow! The Obamas certainly are sticklers for education. Obama has been very vocal about how his eyes have been opened about the struggles women face because of his daughters. There is no doubt we will probably see great things from these young women in the years to come!
Malia’s Stalker Wants to Marry Her
The 30-year-old man from Brooklyn has previously been spotted attempting to get into the White House and has been tracking down Malia in Washington D.C. and New York City, apparently trying to get her to agree to marry him. The New York Post reported that Cardoso was questioned by Secret Service agents on April 13, 2017, and sent to a psychiatric hospital.
Is Barack A Good Father?
Ultra-conservative radio host Alex Jones has said some inflammatory things before, but on an April 2017 edition of his show made an especially wild accusation. Jones, who is a friend of Donald Trump’s, was speaking with writer Mike Cernovich when the topic of conversation turned to Obama’s family life.
Cernovich insinuated that Barack Obama is an absentee father to his daughters, saying “[h]e’s completely abandoned his daughter who is making her rounds through the New York party scene,” referring to Malia. Jones took that line of thinking one step further and suggested that the girls aren’t even Obama’s real children. He offered no evidence to support this theory other than the statement, “The word is those aren’t even his kids.”
