A Monumental Stride For An NYC Monument
The Empire State Building was built in record time—just 20 months. As many as 3,400 men worked on the building each day, many of which were immigrants. They assembled the building’s skeleton at a rate of four and a half stories per week, even finishing the first 30 of 102 stories before all the building plans were complete. Most of the workers were immigrants from Europe, while there were hundreds of iron workers who were Mohawk Native American, from the Kahnawake reserve close to Montreal. The entire project took just 410 days, officially on May 1, 1931.
