The disaster took place on the ground as the Hindenburg was trying to dock. There are many different theories as to why the blimp caught fire, but the most plausible is that the vessel was leaking gas while a spark of static electricity ignited the leak. Other people were suspicious of sabotage, especially since it was a German-manned airship and Germany at the time was under Adolf Hitler’s power. The ship visited America in 1937 and although Americans have yet to discover the atrocities going on in Germany at the time, they were aware that Hitler was a bad man.
