“Oh, The Humanity!”

The Hindenburg disaster is a horrific event in history which explains why there aren’t as many blimps/dirigibles out there as there once were. The disaster occurred on May 6, 1937, as a German airship caught fire and killed over 35 people out of the 97 passengers who were on board. The hydrogen-filled Hindenburg air vessel was on its first transatlantic air service and was just about to land at Lakehurst’s Navy Air Base when the airship suddenly burst into flames after a spark ignited the hydrogen core. Radio announcer Herb Morrison was on assignment to cover the event when he saw what happened and famously declared, “Oh, the humanity!”
