When The Wall Came Crashing Down
As more people tried to escape to West Germany, Kruschev’s wall was fortified, eventually becoming 15 feet tall, topped with barbed wire and guarded by watch towers. Thousands of East Germans were captured attempting to escape to the west, while 191 were killed. But as democratization was making its way across Europe, the communist regime was loosening its restrictions on Germany’s Berlin Wall. The German people began an uprising until East German guards relented and opened the borders on November 9, 1989. The wall was then dismantled and East and West Germany were reunited by 1990.
