Rendered Homeless By Senseless Attacks
This picture depicts children in east London, who were newly homeless following a nighttime air raid by the Nazis. Here they sit outside the wreckage of their own home in 1940. British citizens attempted to seek refuge in communal shelters, many of which were located in the London Underground stations. The Blitz, or Blitzkrieg as British press called it, began as the Germans battled for air superiority over the United Kingdom during World War II. The strikes lasted from 1940 to 1941 and resulted in around 43,000 civilian casualties and about 46,000 injured.
