During the Great Depression, parents and grandparents were forced to sell anything they had to try to make enough money to buy food. This included children, who were sold to people with enough money to buy them, who would then use the children as laborers. However, this caused America to look at its child labor laws and new codes were developed under the National Industrial Recovery Act. Eventually, children under sixteen were not permitted to work in manufacturing or mining and people wanted all available jobs at the time to go to adults.
