Constructed under President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s administration, and greenlit under JFK’s administration, the Bay of Pigs Invasion was led by the CIA as they attempted to overthrow Fidel Castro’s new communist government in 1961. The mission failed, and many attributed that to Kennedy’s decision not to include the airstrikes that had initially designed and agreed upon for the invasion.

After the attack, the CIA kept plotting and attempting to kill Castro. So when Kennedy was assassinated, it was logical for many to point to the Communist leader as the one responsible. After all, Oswald had adopted Marxism after leaving the Marines, which could very well mean his loyalty was to Castro.
