After the horrific and bloody Battle of Berlin, it wasn’t long until the German troops surrendered entirely. Around 80,000 Soviet troops, 100,000 German troops, and 175,000 civilians had been killed in the last two weeks of April. After the surrender of the Germans, the Russians began destroying all German buildings that were symbols of the Nazi regime.

Eventually, they discovered Hitler’s bunker which was then vandalized and raided for memorabilia and goods. Two weeks after the fall of Berlin, photographer William Vandivert from Life became the first western man to photograph the remains of the Führerbunker.
