After the war, there were numerous attempts to destroy the bunker entirely with little success. Then in 1959, the East German government began a series of demolitions on both the Chancellery and the bunker. However, the land remained undeveloped between 1988 and 1989 because it was too close to the Berlin Wall.
Then, during the construction of residential housing in the area, parts of the Chancellery and bunker were rediscovered and filled in. In 2006, an information board was installed at the location of the Führerbunker with an illustration of the layout and history of the bunker.
