“Wikipedia Is Not A Source”

Why was this something we were told in high school? Wikipedia IS a source and it’s a good one. High school teachers had a full-on smear campaign devoted to discrediting the website because it was too convenient for students. Why not just tell students that they could go to Wikipedia and get all the information in one place?
