Most of us expect the FDA — the Food and Drug Administration — to protect us from being harmed by our food. But the FDA gives some questionable concessions to food producers.

The FDA will allow up to 20 maggots of any size per 100 grams of drained mushrooms. It doesn’t seem unreasonable to expect less than 20 maggots in your canned mushrooms… or preferably no maggots at all. If you’re spaghetti sauce calls for canned mushrooms, it may be time to switch to the fresh produce, where at least you can more thoroughly pre-wash your veggies.
