Just Some Things About Food You Can Impress Your Friends With, And Other Things You’d Like To Forget
1/3 Of The Fish You Eat Isn’t The Fish You Think It Is
Fish fraud has been a growing concern for many in the food and restaurant business, but unless you track fish consumption you may not be aware of it. An Oceana study revealed that seafood packaging can be mislabelled 26-87% of the time depending on the region. This not only applies to seafood you buy yourself in grocery stores, but the seafood that restaurants buy to serve to you.
What is even more concerning is that it is still unknown at what point in the supply chain the fraud takes place. Most fishermen know the exact species, where, when, and how it was caught, and if it was farmed or previously frozen, but that information is usually lost in the supply chain. Grab an apple to prove (or debunk) a common schoolyard trick coming up in a bit.
