Popular Netflix Shows That Have Been Renewed For 2021 And Others That Haven’t
Typically, having a Netflix account (or their ex's login) is like owning a bed. It's just a part of life. Even with the unbelievable boom of multiple other streaming services in the past few years, Netflix has managed to stay at the top of the game, mostly due to their pricing, diversity of content, and their beloved Netflix Original films and series. Each year, Netflix releases new shows under their own brand that either make it or break it. Here's a list of those programs that we can expect back in 2021, and others that we're still waiting to hear.
Barbarians: Renewed For Season 2
Barbarians is a 2020 historical war drama series made in Germany. Created by Andreas Heckmann, Arne Nolting, and Jan Martin Scharf, the series is a fictionalized telling of the period in which the Roman Empire occupied Germania and the rebellion that followed under the leadership of Arminius.
Surprisingly, the show's academic response was relatively positive, although some criticized the deviations made from history. The series was then renewed for Season 2 on November 10, 2020.
Dead To Me: Renewed For Season 3
Dead to Me is a dark comedy series starring Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini. The actresses play two women who bond during therapy while grieving for different losses. After the success of the first season, it was renewed for a second in 2019 and a third in 2020.
However, it has also been announced that the third season in 2021 will be the final season of the series. At the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards, Dead o Me received four nominations.
Bridgerton: Renewed For Season 2
Based on Julia Quinn's novels, Bridgerton is a period drama series about the world of British high society in the early 1800s London. Debuting on Netflix on December 25, 2020, by January 4, 2021, the series had been projected to be watched by 64 million households within 28 days of release.
This would make it the fifth most-watched Netflix series of all time. The show also received positive reviews, even being called a "delightful treat," and a combination of Gossip Girl and Downton Abbey."
The Crown: Renewed For Season 5 And Finishing In Season 6
Created by Peter Morgan, The Crown is a historical drama series centering around the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. The show came about as an adaptation of Morgan's own 2006 film The Queen in 2006 and his stage play The Audience in 2013. Each season covers a different period of the queen's reign with new actors being cast every two seasons.
The fifth and sixth seasons, which have been renewed will close out the series, with the estimated production budget of the upcoming series being $260 million, making it one of the most expensive television series ever.
Cobra Kai: Renewed For Season 4
Cobra Kai is a martial arts comedy series coming from what is described as the Miyagi-Verse, or The Karate Kid franchise. The show stars Ralph Macchio and William Zabka, who reprise their roles as Danny LaRusso ad Johnny Lawrence in the original 1984 film.
The show takes place 34 years after the first film's events from Johnny's view and his rekindling of the rivalry between hum and Danny after reopening the Cobra Kai dojo. Initially launching on YouTube Red, it was acquired by Netflix and was renewed for a fourth season before the Season 3 premiere.
The Witcher: Renewed For Season 2
A Polish-American fantasy drama series, The Witcher is based on the book series of the same name by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski.
The series takes place in a fictional medieval world that follows Geralt of Rivia and Princess Ciri, starring Henry Cavill, Freya Allan, and Anya Chalotra. The first season of eight episodes was released on December 20, 2019, with a second season being announced for 2021 before the first was available for streaming on Netflix.
Social Distance: Not Yet Renewed For Season 2
An anthology series created by Hilary Weisman Graham and Orange Is the New Black creator Jenji Kohan, Social Distance was first released on Netflix in October 2020.
The show boasts that it was "conceived, cast and executed entirely remotely during quarantine" as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic and shows how people are dealing with the side effects of quarantine as well as the political environment. Although it had an interesting premise, it had mixed reviews, and a second season has not been announced.
Kingdom: Not Yet Renewed For Season 3
Kingdom is a South Korean political period horror series and is the first Korean series by Netflix. First premiering on January 25, 2019, the show is an adaptation of the webcomic series The Kingdom of Gods by Kim Eun-hee and drawn by Yang Kyung-il.
Taking place three years after the Japanese invasion of Korea, the show centers around a mysterious plague and a political conspiracy that is life-threatening from Crown Prince Lee Chang. Kingdom reviewed mostly positive reviews with The New York Times, naming it one the the "Best International Shows of 2020."
The Gift: Renewed For Season 3 And Ending
Starring Beren Saat, The Gift is a Turkish psychological series written by George and Nuran Evren Şit. It is an adaptation of the novel Dünyanın Uyanışı by Şengül Boybaş, with the first season was released for streaming on Netflix on December 27, 2019, and had eight episodes.
The second season was released in September 2020, and not long after was then renewed for what will be its third and final season, which will be added in 2021.
Stranger Things: Renewed For Season 4
From the minds of the Duffer Brothers, Stranger Things is a science fiction horror-mystery series that first premiered on Netflix on July 15, 2016. Set in the town of Hawkins in the 1980s, the series centers on a group of children as they age into teenagers and their experiences of the supernatural. The show is described as an homage to the 80s, drawing from other works such as Stephen King, Steven Spielberg, and more.
One of the most popular franchises on Netflix, the series has been renewed for Season 4, with the Duffer Brothers claiming it will most likely end after Season 5.
Narcos: Mexico: Renewed For Season 3
Narcos: Mexico is a crime series that originally premiered on Netflix in November 2018. Although it was originally intended to be the fourth season of the previous Narcos series, it was made into a companion series.
The program dials in on the illegal drug trade in Mexico rather than Colombia like the first series. Although it was announced in October 2020 that Narcos: Mexico would be renewed for a third season, it was also announced that Diego Luna would not be reprising his role as Miguel Felix.
The Umbrella Academy: Renewed For Season 3
Based on the comic book series of the same name, by Gerard Way, The Umbrella Academy is a superhero series about an adopted family made up of superheroes that come together in order to learn the secrets of their father's murder and save the world.
With an ensemble cast, the series was going to be a 2011 film but was decided to be a series, eventually picked up by Netflix in 2017. 45 million households watched the first season during its first month of release and was renewed for Season 3 in November 2020.
Outer Banks: Renewed For Season 2
Outer Banks is a teenage action mystery series that began streaming on Netflix on April 15, 2020. The show follows a group of close friends from the Outer Banks of North Carolina that find themselves in a treasure hunt after investigating the death of the group's leader's father.
Although the show didn't receive glowing reviews, the consensus was that the show was entertaining, and according to Indiewire, "there's enough fun to keep a story-hungry audience following along the trail." The show was renewed in July 2020.
Paranormal: Not Yet Reviewed For Season 2
An Egyptian supernatural horror series, Paranormal, is based on the book series 'Ma Waraa Tabiaa' by Ahmed Khaled Tawfik, with the series first available for streaming on November 5th, 2020. The show is Netflix's first original Egyptian-Arabic program and the third Middle Eastern Netflix original series.
Although Paranormal is the No.1 ranked show in Egypt and received glowing reviews, it is still not certain that it will return for a second, even though audiences are begging for it.
On My Block: Not Renewed For Season 4
On My Block is a teen comedy show with the first season being released on Netflix in arch 16, 2018, with ten episodes. Starring Sierra Capri, Jason Genao, Brett Gray, Diego Tinoco, and Jessica Marie Garcia, the show takes place in inner-city Los Angeles and a group of teenagers navigating life as they begin high school.
The show has been praised for numerous reasons, and although it has seen great success with its first three seasons, the fourth season is yet to be announced.
Cursed: Not Yet Renewed For Season 2
Cursed is a fantasy drama series based on the novel of the same name by Frank Miller and Tom wheeler that was first released on Netflix in July 2020, and is described as a "re-imagining of the Arthurian legend."
Rotten Tomatoes reviewed the series saying that "Cursed's first season isn't as subversive as its source material, but strong plotting and a heroic performance from Katherine Langford make for an enjoyable escape." Nevertheless, the show is yet to release that it will have a second season.
Alice In Borderland: Renewed For Season 2
A Japanese science fiction thriller, Alice in Borderland, is based on the manga series of the same name by Haro Asa. The series follows a young man who is lost in a seemingly abandoned Tokyo and his two friends.
However, as they explore the city, they learn that they are being forced into twisted and violent games to survive. Just two weeks after it premiered on Netflix on December 10, 2020, the series was renewed for a second season.
Another Life: Renewed For Season 2
Created by Aaron Martin, Another Life is a science fiction series that tells the story of what happens after a flying object lands on Earth and grows a crystal shell. After it is discovered to be an alien monolith, the characters go into space to find its origin.
Unfortunately, the series did not go over well with the critics, with Rotten Tomatoes stating that it's "A hodgepodge of science fiction homage." Yet, the series was still announced to be renewed for Season 2
Grand Army: Not Yet Renewed For Season 2
Grand Army is a teenage drama series that premiered on October 16, 2020. It is created by Katie Cappiello and is loosely based on her book, following a group of high school students that attend the Grand Army High School in Brooklyn, New York.
The show received mixed reviews, with Rotten Tomatoes commenting that "Grand Army is an excellent showcase for its exciting cast of newcomers—even if its attempt at an honest approach to adolescence is too overwrought to make an impact."
Ozark: The Fourth Season Will Be The Last
Created by Bill Dubuque and Mark Williams, Ozark stars Jason Bateman and Laura Linney. The two actors play a married couple that moves their family to the Ozarks, where they become involved in money laundering and all of the involved issues.
Since its release in 2017, the show has received numerous accolades for directing, acting, and writing. In June 2020, the show was renewed for its fourth and final season, which will consist of 14 episodes split into two parts.
