The Most Beautiful Men In The World, According To Science
Eye placement, brow line, lips, and even nose position affect the symmetry of one's face. As humans, we tend to think people with symmetrical features are more pleasing to look at, but science has given us an actual formula to map out a person's beauty.
The Golden Ratio of Beauty Phi is derived from the ancient Greeks' idea of perfection, and the closer to Phi, the more "accurate" the face. Would you believe that Ryan Gosling's face is 82 percent accurate? Keep reading to learn more about the most beautiful men in the world, according to science.
The Golden Ratio Of Phi Map Was Devised By The Greeks
Devised by the ancient Greeks and utilized during the European Renaissance, the Golden Ratio equation aided artists and architects in the creation of their work. The idea behind the equation is that the closer the ratios of the body and face are to 1.618 (Phi), the more beautiful the person.
The facial ratio is found by measuring the length and width of one's face and dividing the results. A variety of other measurements are taken, and it is said that the closer the numbers are to one another, the more "accurate" the face. Da Vinci used the ratio when drawing Vitruvian Man, supposedly one of the most perfectly proportioned depictions of a man.
Robert Pattinson: 92.15 Percent Accurate
When asked who the most physically beautiful male was, Dr. Julian De Silva, who utilizes the Golden Ratio in his work as a plastic surgeon, said, "Robert Pattinson was the clear winner when all elements of the face were measured for physical perfection."
As a whole, Pattinson's face falls into the top five of nearly all of the ratio categories. The doctor attributes this to his classically shaped face and chiseled jawline. Take that, Team Jacob! Science has proven that Edward is the most handsome man.
Henry Cavill: 91.64 Percent Accurate
Henry Cavill came in at a close second in the running for most beautiful man, according to science. His forehead, as well as his lips, are nearly perfect. With ratios like that, it's no wonder Cavill was cast as Superman for so many years!
Dr. De Silva said, "He had the highest overall score for his lips and forehead and also scored very highly for the matching ratio of nose and lips and his eye position."
Bradley Cooper: 91.08 Percent Accurate
According to the Golden Ratio of Beauty Phi, Bradley Cooper's face is 91.08 percent accurate. While The Star is Born actor was rated highly for his lips, chin, and eye position, he was marked down for a strange reason.
Dr. De Silva said that the actor was marked down because of his nose width and length, as well as his face shape. Sorry, Bradley, but everyone can't have the chiseled nose of a Greek god.
Brad Pitt: 90.51 Percent Accurate
Scoring a 90.51 is incredible, considering Brad Pitt is in his late '50s. According to science, the high score attests to his classic beauty and good genes that are allowing him to age extremely well.
Pitt's forehead, face shape, and eye position all scored fairly high on the ratio scale. He was marked down because of his nose width and length, lip placement, and chin. But to come in near the top of the list is a testament to his silver fox looks.
George Clooney: 89.91 Percent Accurate
In the past few years, George Clooney has been knocked down a few pegs on the Golden Ratio ladder. While he was once in the top spot, the actor now just barely makes it into the top five most beautiful men of 2020, according to science.
Dr. De Silva, said, "George Clooney has been feted as the world's most beautiful man for decades – and it is great that his status has now been proved by science."
Hugh Jackman: 89.64 Percent Accurate
Hugh Jackman is another actor who seems to get better looking the older he turns. His Golden Ratio almost hit 90 percent accurate, scoring high on his nose width and length, forehead, and face shape.
The actor's overall score was marked down because of his lips, nose base, and eye position. Honestly, we don't care what science says. Jackman has some of the prettiest green eyes! And their shape fits his face perfectly.
David Beckham: 88.96 Percent Accurate
When he's playing soccer, it's hard not to stare at David Beckham's perfect form. And, according to science, his face is just as attractive as the rest of him! Beckham has quite the chiseled chin, coming in at a 98.6 percent accuracy, and a near-perfect nose base and lip width at 99.8 percent.
The athlete probably would have given Robert Pattinson a run for his money if not for the position of his eyes being marked down to a 73.2 percent accuracy.
Idris Elba: 88.01 Percent Accurate
Idris Elba came in hot on the Gold Ratio scale, at 88.01 percent accurate. The Golden Globe-winning actor comes in right behind Beckham, almost beating the soccer player in the perfect chin category. Alas, Elba's chin only ranks at a 98.5 percent accuracy.
The actor's forehead, face shape, and eye position all scored relatively high on the accuracy scale, creating an aesthetically pleasing face. Throw in that salt and pepper beard, and you have yourself one handsome fella!
Ryan Gosling: 87.48 Percent Accurate
Of all the beauty-related things to be scored high on, Ryan Gosling's nose width and length are almost perfect, at 99.2 percent accurate. Looking over Dr. De Silva's results, we can conclude that Gosling has a nearly perfect face, with most of his attributes going over the 90 percent accuracy mark.
Two things bring his total ratio down. His eye position is only at 82 percent, and his lips are at a startlingly low 66 percent. Its okay, Ryan, we'll still be a bird with you.
Harry Styles: 89.63 Percent Accurate
The former One Direction singer is known for his gorgeous locks, his voice, and now his face. Harry Styles' overall ratio is 89.63 percent accurate, out-ranking even the easy-on-the-eyes actor Ryan Gosling.
The entertainer can now add his beautiful 98.15 percent accurate eye placement and 99.7 percent chin to his list of many talents, right under selling out stadiums for concerts. Not a bad list of attributes to be able to add to a resume!
Zayn Malik: 86.5 Percent Accurate
Zayn Malik might not have the most proportionate face out of the Old Direction ex-bandmates, but he still ranks pretty high on the Golden Ratio. Malik's accuracy percentage is a high 86.5 percent.
It's not hard to see why model Gigi Hadid fell for the singer. His soulful eyes, well-groomed facial hair, and sharp cheekbones make him pretty nice to look at! And it doesn't hurt that he has an accent.
Will Smith: 88.88 Percent Accurate
The Fresh Prince scored fairly high in his older age. Dr. De Silva scored Will Smith with an 88.88 percent facial accuracy. His highest ratio is his eye placement, which is at a 97.75 percent ratio.
Considering he has a very nice face to gaze at while watching TV and movies, we're curious as to what the Gold Ratio knocked down points for. It couldn't possibly be his lips or forehead. We're going to remain oblivious and say that he's an all-around handsome guy.
Jamie Foxx: 85.46 Percent Accurate
Although he plays an overlooked nerd turned electric blue bad guy in The Amazing Spider-Man, Jaime Foxx is considered to be one of the most handsome men on Earth, according to science. The actor's Golden Ratio equates to 85.46 percent accuracy, and it's not hard to see why.
Foxx boasts a strong forehead and eyes that are evenly set in proportion to his nose and edges of his lips. Tack on the beautiful chocolate color of his eyes and a big smile, and you have one handsome man.
Kanye West: 87.94 Percent Accuracy
Music extraordinaire Kanye West would take way too much offense not being added to this list. Thankfully, according to science, he has a place among the most beautiful men in the world. West's Golden Ratio comes out to 87.94 percent accurate.
And while we don't find him to be the most attractive (might be the personality overshadowing his looks), we can't argue with the facts. West's face is technically proportionate and should be admired as such.
Jason Momoa
Jason Momoa, aka Aquaman, aka Khal Drogo, aka beautiful human with the most lavish hair ever. Although he doesn't have a Golden Ratio, we all know it would be high. After all, he did win the readers' choice poll for People's "Sexiest Man Alive 2019: Sexiest 'Big Year.'"
He won the honor because his name didn't seem ever to leave headlines. And in every photoshoot he ever does, it's hard not to be mesmerized by the intense perfection that is Momoa.
Ryan Reynolds: 2010's Most Beautiful Man Alive
It's hard to argue about Ryan Reynolds' good looks. People magazine seems to agree with the statement, too, because in 2010 he was named the "Sexiest Man Alive."
With his strong chin, subtle cheekbones, and easy-going smile, Reynolds has a boy-next-door charm about him that's hard not to like. Add on the fact that he also has one gorgeous family and it could be argued that he's got it all!
Nikolaj Coster-Waldau
Danish actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau could stop traffic with his smile and easy-going good-looks. Even though he doesn't have a Golden Ratio tacked on to his appearance, International Business Times still thought it was appropriate to name him one of the best-looking men of 2016.
The King-Slayer might be older, but he is one handsome man. What makes him even more attractive is his activist work, raising awareness for the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals.
Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson
Even though he admits it took a while to get comfortable in his own skin, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is still considered to be one of the best looking men on the planet. The thing is, science had nothing to do with People naming Johnson "The Sexiest Man Alive" in 2016.
It was solely due to The Rock's good looks and personality. With a beautiful smile, laugh lines, and bright eyes, the actor is definitely appealing to look at.
Charlie Hunnam
We're very surprised that Charlie Hunnam didn't place on the Golden Ratio scale. But we don't need science to prove the good looks of this man. All we have to do is stare at his boy-next-door good looks and swoon.
The man was set to play Christian Grey, for crying out loud! His intense eyes and rough demeanor would have been an interesting addition to the film. Alas, we're going to have to settle for Sons of Anarchy reruns.
