Childhood TV And Movie Heroes That Were Terrible Role Models

Many children find role models in the heroes of the TV shows and movies that they love. They are attracted to them because they are relatable, brave, funny, and teach them to act appropriately. However, over time, it becomes clear that some of these role models may not be so noble after all. Some of them have significant character flaws that make them anything other than good role models. Although many redeem themselves in the end (because that’s what heroes do), here’s a list of childhood idols that are somewhat questionable in the role model department.

The Little Mermaid’s Ariel Was The Opposite of a Feminist

Although some may say that the mermaid Ariel is a strong, curious, and independent young woman, she’s the opposite. To begin, Ariel falls in love with Eric based solely on the fact that she finds him attractive. She is also willing to leave everything behind just to be with him on land where she knows she’ll have a comfortable life as his princess.

She also has no problem giving up her voice, and therefore her mind, for a pair of legs so that she’ll look beautiful for Eric. Her doing this promotes the idea that little girls should keep quiet and look pretty for boys. She’s not exactly the most empowering female character.
