BTS To Perform Military Service In Their Native South Korea
K-Pop superstars BTS just came back from a month-long hiatus of rest and relaxation. However, sometime in the near future, they may have to take another break—this time for military service.
The group is from South Korea, and the East Asian country requires military service from male citizens 18 to 28 years old. The only time exceptions are made is if the person is an athlete or artist who won an international competition, such as the Olympics.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, none of these exceptions will be given to the group. They also report that the South Korean Ministry of Defense is reviewing its guidelines.
"The Ministry of Defense is currently debating with related authorities on improving the current alternate service (program) in place of conscription, but nothing has been decided as to when a change may take effect," says The Hollywood Reporter.
None of the seven members of the group have served their military service yet. Jin is one member who will soon have to begin his service, should no guidelines change, as he turns 27 this December. The length of a term in South Korea is usually between 18 and 22 months.
Their fans, known as the Army, have even started petitions that encourage the group to enlist together so that their hiatus is all at the same time and only the two years of the military term. The band has not announced anything regarding when they plan to enlist.
