Big Winners From the 2019 Tony Awards
In its 73rd year running, the Tony Awards hit Radio City Musical Hall on June 9, 2019. As always, there were some big winners of the night, celebrating the best musicals of the year. For his "Hadestown" performance as Hermes, André de Shields won Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role. "Hadestown" took the stage again and again, winning Best Original Score Written for Theater, Best Scenic Design of a Musical, Best Lighting Design of a Musical, Best Sound Design of a Musical, Best Orchestrations and Best Direction of a Musical.

Another musical that had its moment in the spotlight at the 2019 Tony Awards was "The Ferryman" which won the Best Direction of a Play, Best Costume Design of a Play and Best Scenic Design of a Play. Other highlights include Bryan Cranston taking home the Best Lead Actor in a Play Award, beating out fellow nominees Adam Driver, Jeremy Pope, Jeff Daniels, and Paddy Considine. Ali Stroker became the first person who uses a wheelchair to ever be nominated for, and to receive a Tony Award. She thanked "my best friends, who have held my hands and pulled me around New York City for years helping me."
