Renewal Roundup: Which TV Shows Will Be Coming Back for Another Season, And Which Got The Boot?
Although fans have always found it shocking and upsetting when their favorite TV shows are suddenly canceled, it's getting harder and harder to predict when that will happen nowadays.
In the age of streaming, it's hardly a rare occurrence for a promising series to get snuffed out before it can really hit its stride, making fans all the more vigilant about the status of their favorites. But since there are so many shows to keep track of, it's high time for a handy way to celebrate each renewal and lament each cancellation.
Canceled: Star Trek: Picard
According to the AV Club, this isn't to say that any of the networks behind Star Trek: Picard have suddenly pulled the plug on it.
Instead, showrunner Terry Matalas confirmed that the third season which premiered on February 16, 2023, will be the show's last. As for why, the team behind the show believes they've simply found a satisfying conclusion.
Renewed: Arcane
For fans of the popular and acclaimed League of Legends adaptation, Arcane, the question isn't whether they'll get to see another season but when that will happen.
Because as far back as November of 2021, Riot Games CEO Nicolo Laurent confirmed via Twitter that Season 2 is coming and it won't take six years to make as the first one did. Even so, with so much time passing since that announcement with no confirmed release date, it seems fans still have a waiting game ahead of them.
Renewed: Abbott Elementary
If the three awards that workplace sitcom Abbott Elementary won at the Golden Globes made fans confident that their beloved show would return, they were right to feel that way.
Because Entertainment Tonight reported that Abbott Elementary was renewed for a third season just a day after those awards came home.
Canceled: The Goldbergs
Although the autobiographical '80s nostalgia sitcom The Goldbergs was able to weather the departure of stars Jeff Garlin and George Segal, The Hollywood Reporter warned that the show's declining ratings, expensive licensing fees, and ownership hassles spelled doom for the show.
And Entertainment Tonight confirmed these concerns were valid as ABC officially canceled The Goldbergs.
Renewed: My Lottery Dream Home
After winning, judging, and hosting HGTV Design Star throughout its run, design guru David Bromstad launched My Lottery Dream Home, a show that seems him help recent lottery winners find the property they've always dreamed of.
And according to TV Scorecards, the 14-season strong series has been renewed for Season 15. So fans can rest easy in the knowledge that Bromstad isn't going anywhere.
Renewed: Bridgerton
According to Harper's Bazaar, any doubt fans may have had that the Regency-era romance Bridgerton would return for Season 3 could disappear in January when Netflix made a big announcement.
Before Season 2 even premiered, the streaming giant confirmed that Bridgerton would be renewed for both Season 3 and Season 4.
Renewed: Grey's Anatomy
Grey's Anatomy's record as the longest-running medical drama in TV history is about to be even harder to beat because Entertainment Tonight reported that it had been renewed for its 20th season.
A show with that longevity can expect a lot of changes in its run, and the latest of them will see Meg Marinis take over as showrunner after years of working as a researcher and executive producer on it.
Canceled: The Flash
As The Hollywood Reporter stated last August, the ninth season of The Flash will not only be the last one but is also shorter than a typical season at 13 episodes.
Still, it wasn't in the show's original plan to even make it this far, as The Flash was slated to end in Season 8 before the network and the studio was able to secure its stars for a final farewell.
Renewed: The Mandalorian
While the Disney+ flagship series The Mandalorian was renewed for Season 3 last year, a Cinemablend interview with creator Jon Favreau indicated that a fourth season is likely in the cards for the show as well.
Favreau revealed that he was already writing for Season 4 as far back as May 29, 2022. The third season premiered on March 1, 2023.
Renewed: Stranger Things
If any series can be considered Netflix's flagship show, it's Stranger Things. That meant it was no surprise when Deadline reported that the streaming service renewed the sci-fi nostalgia-fest for a fifth season.
However, Netflix also announced that this would be the last season of the show's historic run. For hardcore fans, this wasn't a complete surprise as co-creators Matt and Ross Duffer mentioned envisioning the show's story completing in "four or five seasons" when Stranger Things began.
Renewed: Wednesday
Although the mystery series based on the popular Addams Family franchise is acclaimed enough to become Netflix's third most popular series of all time, fans were concerned that it would move to Prime Video after Amazon bought MGM.
However, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Season 2 of Wednesday is staying put on Netflix, and it is definitely on the way.
Renewed: Bob's Burgers
According to Entertainment Tonight, the quirky animated sitcom Bob's Burgers has not only been renewed for a 14th season, but Fox has also already greenlit Season 15.
This means that barring an unexpected turn of events, fans can look forward to watching more of it until at least 2025. After that, time will tell.
Canceled: Willow
Over 30 years after the original '80s fantasy classic, Disney+ continued the story of Willow with a new series in 2022.
However, it doesn't seem like this new chapter had the impact Disney hoped it would, as People reported that the series would not be coming back for a second season.
Canceled: Tom Swift
Fans of Nancy Drew were hit with quite the one-two punch last year. Not only has Entertainment Tonight confirmed that the fourth season (premiering on May 31) would be the show's last, but the CW also suddenly canceled the show's spinoff Tom Swift after less than a month of airing.
According to Variety, Tom Swift only aired five episodes before the network decided to pull the plug.
Renewed: Hell's Kitchen
According to Deadline, the Gordon Ramsay-helmed cooking competition Hell's Kitchen remains the number one cooking show for adults between 18 and 49, which makes it less than surprising that it would be renewed for its 21st season.
Moreover, Fox is so confident in the show's performance that it's also been renewed for Season 22.
Renewed: It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia
Those eagerly awaiting the 16th season of the irreverent but hilarious sitcom It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia can take solace in the fact that their wait won't be in vain.
According to Entertainment Weekly, the hit series has also been renewed for both Season 17 and Season 18. Should these seasons appear as scheduled, that will make It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia the longest-running live-action sitcom in television history.
Canceled: Riverdale
After years of growing more and more polarizing for its fanbase, the teen drama Riverdale is coming to an end.
As Newsweek reported, the CW announced that the show's seventh season (premiering on March 29, 2023) would be Riverdale's last. As for the reason for the cancelation, both the creator and the cast felt that the show's seven-year run was long enough.
Renewed: Squid Game
Considering what a runaway global success the first season of the ambitious Korean thriller series Squid Game was, it's hardly a surprise that fans would be clamoring for Season 2.
And judging by a report from Variety, Netflix heard those fans loud and clear as their chief content officer Ted Sarandos confirmed that a second season is on the way. In his words, "The Squid Game universe has just begun."
Renewed: Cobra Kai
According to Entertainment Weekly, The Karate Kid sequel series Cobra Kai has been renewed for its sixth season.
However, the outlet also reported that the martial arts dramedy would end with that season. And in a message to the fans, the show's three creators describe their decision to end the show as following their day-one goal of doing so on their own terms.
Canceled: Mindhunter
After Season 2 of the psychological crime thriller Mindhunter hit Netflix, fans experienced radio silence from Netflix as they awaited news of a third season.
Unfortunately, Vulture reported that director David Fincher broke the bad news that Season 3 is not going to happen. In his words, "I'm very proud of the first two seasons. But it’s a very expensive show, and in the eyes of Netflix, we didn’t attract enough of an audience to justify such an investment."
Renewed: Curb Your Enthusiasm
Larry David's long-running improvised sitcom Curb Your Enthusiasm can already boast impressive longevity since its debut in 2000. And it's about to run a little longer.
As Variety reported, HBO renewed the provocative comedy series for Season 12. As the company's executive vice president of programming, Amy Gravitt, said, "We're thrilled for him, Jeff Schaffer, and our phenomenal cast to continue making us laugh and cringe in equal measure."
Canceled: Gossip Girl
Despite a strong opening in 2021, People reported that the HBO Max reboot of the CW series Gossip Girl had been canceled after two seasons.
Although the reason for the cancelation is vague, showrunner Joshua Safran confirmed the news "with the heaviest of hearts" in a tweet that thanked everyone involved in the production.
Renewed: Young Sheldon
According to Entertainment Tonight, The Big Bang Theory prequel Young Sheldon inspired a great deal of confidence from CBS executives as the show was renewed for a whopping three seasons in 2021.
If everything goes as scheduled, the network won't need to decide the sitcom's fate again until Season 7 starts airing in 2024.
Canceled: Reboot
This Hulu series was a satirical comedy set behind the scenes of a reboot of a fictitious 20-year-old sitcom. But while Reboot's premise attracted fans, it seems that it didn't garner enough of them.
People reported that Hulu passed on a second season for Reboot, and creator Steven Levitan is now trying to pitch it to other streaming networks.
Renewed: The Simpsons
Since 2018, The Simpsons has made history as the longest-running primetime scripted series to ever appear on television, and it looks like that run isn't stopping anytime soon.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Fox renewed the veteran animated sitcom for both Season 35 and Season 26. As such, no further decision regarding the show's fate will likely occur until 2025.
Canceled: Monarch
This country music-themed family drama achieved decent ratings when the series premiere aired but struggled to retain its audience over the following ten episodes.
So as Deadline reported, the leadership at Fox has decided to cancel Monarch after just one season. This is despite the fact that the show was the first scripted series Fox launched that the network owned in its entirety.
Canceled: Inside Job
According to Entertainment Weekly, fans of the hilarious yet slightly paranoia-inducing animated series Inside Job once breathed a sigh of relief when Netflix renewed it in 2022.
However, the streaming giant has since reversed course and unceremoniously canceled the show for unknown reasons. Inside Job's heartbroken creator, Shion Takeuchi, confirmed the news on Twitter in January of 2023.
Canceled: 1899
After 1899 creators Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar gave Netflix an international hit in the form of Dark, their next supernatural horror series did not seem in danger of facing cancelation.
Nonetheless, The Guardian reported that despite its promising performance with audiences, Netflix suddenly canceled 1899 at the beginning of 2023.
Renewed: What We Do In The Shadows
The quirky vampire comedy What We Do In The Shadows has clearly proven a promising hit for FX, as Variety reported that the network renewed the show for Season 5 and Season 6 in June of 2022.
As Nick Grad, FX's president of original programming, said, "There's a lot of life left in our favorite vampires from Staten Island, and FX couldn't be more thrilled to commit to two additional seasons of this phenomenal series."
Renewed: Family Guy
According to The Hollywood Reporter, viewers will have all the Family Guy they could want until at least 2025, as Fox has renewed the popular cartoon for another two seasons.
As long as everything goes according to plan, fans can expect to catch both Season 22 and Season 23 in the coming years.
