Despite being untrained, Marla landed a role on Broadway in 1992, in The Will Rogers Follies as “Ziegfeld’s Favorite.” It was right after Marla and Donald made their long-term affair a “legitimate” relationship, and the public was looking for any reason to bash Marla. Even fellow performers were talking trash. A mother of one of the actresses who had a lesser role was quoted as saying, “It’s amazing what a little money can do,” speculating that Marla only received the role because Donald paid someone for it. Their hopes for a spectacular failure went down in flames, as she did quite well in the role and never had a mishap.
