Tom Hanks Discovers He Is Related to Mister Rogers
There is no better person to play children's show host Fred Rogers than Tom Hanks. He plays the role of Rogers in the upcoming film A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood and just learned that he's actually related to him!
During a recent interview with Access Hollywood, the actor and his wife, Rita Wilson, were told that he's related to the iconic character he plays in the movie.
"No, impossible! You're pulling our leg," Wilson said when Access Hollywood told the duo.
It turns out the two men are sixth cousins according to Ancestry.com. Their common ancestor was Johannes Meffert.
"Fred Rogers and Tom Hanks are sixth cousins sharing the same 5x great-grandfather ... who immigrated from Germany to America in the 18th century," Ancestry spokeswoman Keri Madonna told CNN.
Hanks said he had no idea about this when he took the role.
"It all just comes together, you see," Hanks said.
If you'd like the chance to see Hanks show just how similar he can be to his sixth cousin, the film premieres on November 22nd.
