There are parents that understand and encourage their children’s wants and dreams. Then there are the ones that want to mold them how they see fit like playdough. Tom Petty’s father wanted to do the molding and not the understanding. And because of this, Petty says what his father did still haunt him today.

Petty’s dad beat him and verbally abused him when he was young all because he did not tolerate the fact that his son was into the arts. What he would do to try and instill other interests in him (besides the abuse) was take him on hunting trips. Basically, he wanted to make him into what he thought his son should have been. Sadly, Tom Petty died on October 2, 2017, after suffering cardiac arrest.
