“Respect” Would Become An Anthem For Feminist And Civil Rights Movements

The timing of the song couldn’t be more perfect for the country at large. 1967 was a time when feminist and civil rights movements were sweeping across America, so a song like “Respect” was easy to adopt as an anthem for a group that was demanding equality.

Of course, the song would have a lasting impact far greater than the two Grammy’s Franklin received for the record. In 2002, the Library of Congress added “Respect” to the National Recording Registry, and it was even named as one of the “Songs of the Century” by the Recording Industry of America and the National Endowment for the Arts.
