The Presidential Medal of Freedom is an award bestowed by the President of the United States, and is the highest civilian award in the United States. The goal is to recognize people who have made ‘an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, or other significant public or private endeavors.”

In 2005, Frankin received the Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush. President John F. Kennedy established the current decoration back in 1963.
